The new model has a bigger mouse pad, but the gel pad is covered with a harder vinyl and is not nearly as soft as the old gel pad that had a clear cover and gel.
-
The pad features a soft gel rest for your wrist and it is designed to be in what is called a neutral position that will provide the most comfort and least stress on your wrist
-
The wrist rest is a stiff gel but gets the job done, I would prefer a softer gel or a foam pad

I love the gel and no slip bottom.
-
The gel is supportive yet very comfortable.
-
Love the short, soft, gel wrist rest--it's the perfect height, but the mousing surface offers a bit more resistance than I'm used
-
We have bought several 3M Mouse Pads in the past that had soft gel pads and layed flat.
-
I was hoping that it would be softer, but the gel is fairly rigid
-
Bought this to replace an old model of 3M's gel pad that finally started leaking the gel.
-
gel is not hard, but not that very soft. medium-hard
-
but 3M's gel is simply the best in my opinion.
-
At least as importantly, there's a very comfortable gel pad to avoid wrist fatigue
-
The mouse pad itself is nice, very high quality and mouse moves nicely on it, but the wrist/palm rest hurts my palm as the gel is actually hard and is too low
