I have gotten decent sound out of it sometimes, but the risk is too great with anything important.

If you keep completely still you can avoid this, but even the slightest movement results in a loud obnoxious sound in your recordings

In all attempts at recording piano sound from different locations around the room and with the different recording options, the piano ( a grand ) sounded more like an old upright in every attempt

The quality of the hardware as well as the sound is spot on

The input sensitivity is broad on everything, including the built-in mics, so you should be able to get a good sound so long as you mess with it and understand what levels work best for what type of recording

I can't believe how well this little Tascam can record sound

But off the machine it's weird sounding

The sound quality was amazing, and with just a little bit of clipping with Audacity, the songs sounded terrific.

As a test, I loaded and played an mp3 file from the DR-40 in my earphones and the sound was clear, so this tells me there is something wrong with the input amplification section of the device

Also I bought the SESCOM L pad cable array which I will use with my Panasonic 2.5 mm input for a little better video sound.

This one works perfect, and I gotta say the sound on this is really good

The sound was great with this set up, but the Sennheiser is delivers a more powerful signal

all of the modes, you get fresh, crisp sounding audio.though the menu can be confusing at first

How ever after testing it many times, either the built in condenser microphones or using external AT897-Audio Technica shotgun condenser mic, both of them return excellent recording sounds

This a great recorder, though not cheap it gives great sound when making Demos to test your pipes or guitar skills

Up until that point, the DR-40 recorded lovely sound and was easy to use

Even under these less-than-optimal conditions, the sound is stellar

I'm also getting some clipping on hard P sounds, even though I am not that close to the mics and the level monitor doesn't indicate clipping

but I been using the XY mics and really enjoy the sound that capture.!

But the internal mics are going to be perfect for most applications including acoustic recording in a good sounding room

In the heat of run and gun, you don't want to always be second guessing the dumb sound interface

Unlike modern laptops with horrible sound hardware, this does not require a special line-lump power supply that can get lost or broken; it does not have a laptop monitor hinge that will wear out and break; there is no reason why, twenty years from now, my kids, once grown, shouldn't be able to dig this out of my gear closet, remember how much fun they had singing along with Adele into it, dust it off, pop in fresh batteries, and do it again, just like they do today

If that cell phone is on, even on vibrate, the sound the phone makes by itself could potentially ruin the recording anyways

It has fantastic sound, the mics are great, and the ability to rotate them into 2 different patterns makes way for numerous possibilities as a Sound Designer

This doesn't sound like much; after all, I think that correlates to moving back about 1 meter during recording (presuming sound moves at 343m/s, the delay of .003 sec corresponds to ~1 meter)

If you're doing recording on those neat U-shaped rigs, this mounts nicely on top to capture that sweet audio.
