We've tried all different brands of the compatible cartridges - and even though a different brand caused our printer (Canon MX922) to stop working - once we replaced them with the ones from Blake - it started working again.
With the black solid color cartridge, you just have the assume that the ink really is gone and change out the cartridge more frequently.
