The larger slot is a perfect fit for the ancient Grover (patent pending) tuners on the banjo.
Despite that this is a production model winder (as probably 95% on the market are), it still provided excellent fit with, again, excellent, smooth action as well as outstanding tactile fit in the hand

My guitar playing, obsessed with strings spouse loves it...attractive wood and it functions as advertised...much nicer than a plastic one.

I think a small, properly shaped pad of this type should be made part of the packaging with the product; inexpensive and a nice addition to accommodate short-shaft machine heads.
