Never mind large envelopes, beat-up or baggy envelopes, plastic/tyvek envelopes (plastic mostly on magazines) or anything other than a nice, clean number 10
I'd rate it "not bad" if and only if one is using it occasionally on a clean, firm number 10 envelope with one sheet (maybe two) of paper in it
It didn't cut even those consistently for me (and I do this a LOT), and like another reviewer I had a number of partial cuts

When I say "correct technique" I'm referring to the fact that you need to make sure the contents of the envelope are away from the edge you're going to cut
The correct technique results in less of a "slice" and more of a deep scratch in the envelope

This opener works, doesn't mess up the envelope and is perhaps the second best letter opener I have ever seen
I highly recommend this letter opener--an excellent value for the money.
It's not the most sturdy letter opener, in the beginning it worked great but a couple of days later the little blade seems to have gotten loose and won't cut open an envelope any more
I sadly don't recommend this letter opener unless it's upgraded to a more sturdy and long lasting version.

Unless my opener was defective (it has a blade and a piece of rubber, so I don't think it was), this deserves no more than 2 stars
