I don't think this is the fault of the chime itself, but probably a function of the mallet, which is made of hard plastic.

Lovely wood and nice sound, but it comes with a junky plastic mallet which looks as if could have been the toy inside a Cracker Jack's box

The pitch and tone are awful as it painfully hurts your ears
