If you are running yards in a battery to the rear of the vehicle you can just ground the auxiliary battery to the chassis and the system will still function properly

Early in the season I was stuck at the dock with a dead main battery.

I used 2AWG marine grade wiring for the second battery as I added a switch in between to isolate the batteries

Since the auxiliary battery was a smaller capacity battery it could drain the chassis battery during long storage periods leaving me with a dead chassis battery.
