First, I got myself a new phone number on Google Voice, where I could browse a limited set of phone numbers available in my area.

Make sure you have the correct phone and do not expect to be serviced like a big telecom company

Recommend a "newer" phone that is unlocked for Verizon and AT&T/T-Mobile.

I also got a decent Android phone from Amazon, making sure it would work on TMobile LGE network.
