I did not use the card in other countries, so I cannot vouch for it outside of Japan; however, there were very helpful instructions included in the packet on checking the amount of data remaining (though I also found that my iPhone's Cellular tab reset the "Period" for the data use for the new SIM card, so I mostly used that after checking a few times that they were the same).
