Battery must be dead.

I recently realized that the battery was dead but when I went to replace it, I was unable to put the cover back in place

Perhaps the battery is dead

I was sold a defective battery only to be told I can buy a new one.

Don't really know how well it works as it arrived with a dead battery.

If I use my fingers, the reading isn't as accurate (I shake) as when I just put it on the left side of my chest with cell phone on top of it
