We rarely use the Switch as a handheld toy, we primarily keep it in the charging base and use the controllers separately, I really dislike having to connect the controller back on the Switch to charge, so this is the best option available being able to skip that annoying step

I would probably suggest one with rails to a family with kids who aren't careful, but this is a great option if that's not a concern.
