i recommend for removing the old paste if possible with just a cotton ball first before apply the thermal material remover (1) its less of a messy job.

That old stuff was caked on but this cleaner did a great job, and I felt like I was able to get the old thermal compound cleaned off right down to bare metal

This wasn't worth deducting a star though as the product does a very good job in removing any thermal compound.
