The stock antenna is not bad but Iwould suggest buying a better antenna if you want more range

The stiffer antenna supplied with the UV5R is prone to breakage when getting in and out of vehicles

Next the supplied antenna worked for a short while, but soon was defective: has intermittent internal connections and when touched on one side it would not make good electrical contact

But with a better antenna I can talk to a buddy over 3 miles away in town practically crystal clear no problem

Also would have preferred to pay alittle more to get a better antenna with the radio in the same order.

It isn't a "deal breaker" for me, since I don't have trouble modifying the antennas
