I found a review for the HA400 Amp that detailed the components to build a simple amplifier that did not have the inherent issues of the [super expensive] all-in-one portable TV amplifiers advertised by the late-night telemarketers.

It is essential, when comparing different headphones or speakers of any sort, to ensure the volume coming out of the different units is exactly the same, because our ears/brain otherwise will hear the sounds differently and will prefer one sound over the other as much for the volume as for the sound quality.

In addition to the ever-present problem of overwhelming feedback, I've experienced L/R channel dropout by simply touching a knob.

The only improvement I would make is possible having the I/O panel top mounted to allow full access to this unit from one direction (such as for rack mounting it).
