The ball joint is certainly not user error, though, and while not a big issue and is easily corrected once you get to smoother terrain, it is why I've given a 4/5 in stability

I do not know if it will hold the phone successfully over bumpy terrain.

Not much to say its a good mount that does what its supposed to, my phone stays put I would always recommend using the silicone strap just makes it more secure more rocky terrain.
