Just enough extra space so I can put my big fingers in and take the cups out comfortably.

I do have it slightly pulled out for the operational clearance of the pod-holder arm, but all in all, LOVE it and handy (I have very limited counter-top space, so this was a major plus!!

just make sure you've got enough space beneath your cabinets if you have a large machine to go on top.
