The top surface is lightly pebbled and matte so that there is only slight reflection off the surface

Second, it's good quality with enough thickness in the material to provide a nice surface for your arms and elbows.

Update:I have had these mats on our desks for a while now and we both love them, they are comfortable and easy to keep clean and protect a large surface
