The screws are too short and the top piece wont stay in place

It's a nice enough looking piece, designed by a gifted 14 year old in a wood shop somewhere, but it doesn't have sound engineering principles.

Several of the boards had cracks in them, one had a pieces of a staple sticking out of the end
