I have tried a competing brands longer range super-zoom, but this outshines it in the ease of focus and its quickness.

Although I don't think I've ever thought to myself when using my S100, 'wow, I really wish this thing zoomed in a bit farther than it does.

I often use the 30 X zoom like binoculars to take pictures and then after their processed can zoom in even further.

It has enough optical zoom to pull in distant objects but still allows me to stuff it in my pocket and keep it out of view when I am not using it.

The aperture is fine for this type of camera, ranging from f/3.2 to 6.9, although again, it won't match the abilities of a super-zoom or DSLR.Both the image and video quality are what you'd expect from Canon.

Just to compare for myself, I took the exact same picture with both the SX40 and SX710, with the same image settings - the 40's photo was sharper and had better focus on tiny details, and I expected that from the better lens of the super-zoom.

As with all super zoom camera you do have to watch for shaking at the higher zooms.

Sturdy and good zoom

I was looking to replace my Kodak Z950 travel zoom after nearly 5 years of service, and was very pleased with the performance of my now 2-year-old Canon SX40 HS super-zoom, so I was going to look at Canon first.

The 30X zoom that this camera has is one of the longer zooms available that will still collapse down to an almost flat state when shut off (the lens still sticks out about 1/4" from the body when closed).This camera turns on very quickly and is ready to take a picture in less than 1 second.

The zoom is great, but I do find that maximizing it you will not get the quality you would want, tends to be grainy

if you're going on a photo-intensive trip, bird watching, or some similar activity and want "awesome/incredible" pictures, then use a super-zoom or DSLR.
