You have to have a hard setting only.

Second one works fine, lowest setting keeps a hot mug hot, high setting will warm up a lukewarm mug

It then turns on to low setting - I want mine on hot, so I press the switch twice to get to the right setting

The first setting is not hot enough to impact the taste for any cup that has coffee silt in it

The high setting is great for the hotter coffee making methods like my siphon pot

And the hot setting only works on flat bottomed mugs/cups.

I use the less-hot setting when the coffee gets low
