It does what it's supposed to: it stays in place; it helps keep the teeth from slipping; attenuates uncomfortable, high-frequency vibration to the teeth (at no harm to the instrument's sound); and it protects the mouthpiece.

protects the mouthpiece from bite marks (but you shouldn't be biting that hard anyway) ;-)
