Contacted the seller who indicated the odor was the wood stain used on the frog.

Purchased this as a gift for a four year old who loves Musikgarten class (which involves a lot of calm listening activities and instruments made of organic materials, such as wood).The frog is a little bigger than the palm of an adult's hand.
