The back section fits 1-2 small notepads for easy access, the area above the drawer is perfect to put my sticky note pads, and the height of the pen sections is tall enough to keep pens in without a problem, while not being too tall to where it makes the pens hard to grab quickly.

So the upper compartment does fit regular sized sticky notes which is what I mainly needed it for.

I put in paper clips, rubber bands, sticky notes, notepads, electronic notepads, USB drives, and even a couple pieces of paper occasionally
