Probably inserting a hard plastic element or strip inside the thin side panels—like battens in a sail boat sail—would essentially tighten up/stiffen up the sides and fix this, but that would probably be done *during* manufacturing.

It almost seems like the package/case got wet at some point and then dried out and the plastic got that moldy smell.

I personally don't see how they could improve it (maybe a piece of hard plastic underneath, but that's what 5 stars are for

A harder plastic material infused with the silicon would hold significantly longer and endure heavier usage

so we purchased this since it looks nice in the pictures as well as it has good reviews
