It can function as a mono iem, but you will lose a little bit of signal in the left ear (which I'm sure many people noticed) because it's being fed the negative signal through the XLR cable.

I tested the unit with a pair of mid-level quality earbuds ($35 Skull Candy) connected to the headphone jack on my mixer (Behringer XAIR XR18) over a 20 foot xlr cable and the sound was as clear and distinct as could be - much better than a floor monitor.
