The first unit I ordered didn't work well: I put a very thin metal pot with 8 cups of already hot tap water on it with the dial set to High and after more than HALF AN HOUR, it NEVER boiled.

We tried to boil water and checked it ever ten minutes until 40 minutes had gone by and it stayed the same 'warmish' temp for the duration

I think maybe the reason it lacks power to boil water is that it only has 750 watts

I had a difficult time with finding a temperature that stayed consistent and it took a long time to cook or even boil water

My only consolation is that it didn't cost very much, but I do not recommend anyone purchase this unit unless you are just melting wax or something, but even then it would be worth your time to find a burner that could actually boil water in less than 10 minutes.

Since stores (physical or online) no longer offer the low price that Walgreens did 5 years ago (probably because of the economy), I would guess it would cost a lot more than $12.95 these days to get a hotplate with power decent enough just to boil water.

This is closer to a 500 watt unit, which means it could take you 30 minutes just to boil water

The plus point is that this does not require a lot of space and it gets sufficiently hot to boil milk/water in a small pot

It is slow to boil water, but it does do it

Boils water for one box of Mac and Cheese, heats soup, doesn't burn house down
