Epson Perfection V550 Color Photo, Image, Film, Negative & Document Scanner with 6400 dpi (Certified Refurbished)

    • Unfortunately, most of my medium format negatives are cut to a non-standard size, so I improvised an additional holder using mat board, as recommended on one forum
    • The larger scanner comes with allegedly better software, greater capacity and more sophisticated holders but in the end, it is pretty much the same level of scan and the better holders are not really that much better
    • V550 is even better - Epson tweaked a lot of small things and the negative holders is much better than before.
    • The scanner comes with a negative holder attachment and the preview breaks out the pics into individual files with no problems
    • Final problem - the negative holder.
    • On the other hand, I can't believe how ineffective the negative holder for 35mm is
    • The holder for film strips and slides makes these two processes easy as well - discovering and scanning each separate image
    • that thing had a very sturdy film/ negative holder.
    • In fact is really dislike their holders
    • I was a little leery about purchasing a refurbished scanner after reading another review where there was no power cord or slide/negative holders included
    • The only thing I wished I had is more negative holders so that I can stage my scans, but this is something I can take care of with a little more money.
    • The 120 holder works fine for me, however.
    • that thing had a very sturdy film/ negative holder.
    • One weakness is the plastic holders for negatives and slides.
    • The scanner surprised me in some ways the end result/performance, though I would prefer slightly more robust holders (it might be worth picking up an extra set to load up whilst you are scanning
    • V550 is even better - Epson tweaked a lot of small things and the negative holders is much better than before.
    • Here are my CONs, none of which would cause me to return the scanner:1) scanner cannot handle 3 4x6s at once; it can't pick out the boundary between the closely-spaced prints2) "auto" modes struggle to define boundaries and has a very low initial resolution3) buttons on front are worthless unless you can reassign them4) absolutely cannot get good scans on negatives or prints from simulated B&W C-41 film.5) automatic border definition crops out irregular edges such as torn paper and prints from carved out negative holders
    • The negative holder on this one just feels cheap, like it will break easily if not handled with care!No complaints about the scan quality and I love the Digital Ice program, but come on - the film holder should be a little beefier like it was on the RX600!
    • Another grave disappointment is the silly plastic slide holder
    • It comes with a 35mm slide/negative film holder, which can handle 4 slides to scan at once, which still can be time consuming.
    • How can I say this, but the glass is nothing more than a plan piece of cheap-o windowpane glass, not like the solid glass that Epson scanners used years previous, and the glass is not "smooth"
