After a painful period of half an hour or so of going through step by step stuff, they eventually told me what I already knew.. the machine is experiencing a hardware failure.

Don’t try to change your cartridge if you do printer will suffer hardware failure.

I ended up having a "hardware failure" after owning the printer for less than 4 months
