When grinding spices, and sometimes coffee, the spices will escape through the cracks and fly out everywhere

it grinds not only bigger spices like cinnamon ,cloves, cardamom to fine powder even the smallest seeds like chia seeds, hemp hearts seeds, flax seeds to fine powdery form

The lid reaches down around the outside of the mill, and ground spices get caught down there and simply falls off when the lid is removed

The only downside I've had in my experience so far is that it doesn't grind some spices as easily as other grinders

I can definitely use my Vitamix for grinding seeds and spices, but it's hard to get all of the ground up powder out of the canister when I'm finished without wasting a lot of it, because Vitamix canisters do not unscrew from the bottom, as is the case with inexpensive blenders

For coffee grind a shorter time, for finely ground spices like my beloved chilitepin it will even grind the tiny chili seeds
