In the past I have tried several vent mounts without success

Oddly enough this little mount works very well in my 2016 Camaro.

Another option, if you prefer the mount in a completely "locked in place" configuration, would be to place it to the extreme left side of the dashboard, and wedge the phone, in the vertical position, between the mount and the window postl

so I was looking for something other than a vent mount.

Tried the vent, stickem, and suction mounts and none of them worked with this larger smartphone in an otterbox.

For someone with a different designed car, or not so vertically challenged, I can’t imagine a better mount

To have something that will work under ALL conditions you'll probably have to go with a hard mounted bracket and live with the obstruction.
