the raised lip around the edges not only protects when you lay the phone down anywhere, but its also a bit 'sticky', and the phone won't slip and slide on surfaces.

Also, the side is a hard rubber material that doesn't scuff or show any wear, and it great for gripping the phone and works great when propping up the phone to watch a video.
