The reading light is adequate for reading if it's right there and the forward facing light could be brighter but does illuminate the channel selection portion which is nice

The self powered hand crank charger, after 2 minutes of cranking, enabled not only the radio and LED lights to power up nicely, but I was also able to partially charge my cellphone (using my cellphone's USB cord) off of that amount of power.

The compact size is perfect for storing until needed, and it is great that there is a flashlight and reading light with this unit as well--it takes care of several needs with one purchase.

The built-in rechargeable battery was fully powered as soon as I plugged it in, my local weather band was easy to tune in, the FM radio stations come in clearly even without extending the antenna, the lights are bright, and the controls are intuitive and easy to operate
