All the clarity / treble disappears leaving a barely understandable muffled sound

I have a nice sound system, but have such an odd space that I can not control the sound of the tracks that come out of my iPod and/or iPad

i connect an altec lansing orbit speaker to airport express, but there was no way to limit the volume, coz when the sound transmission starts for the first time the sound was very loud and could damage the speakers
