The cover folds together nicely and lays flat, I just tuck the strap under itself and all the pages are protected by the cover except the top and bottom, but at least things in my bag don't get wedged inside and ruin the pages like sometimes happens in books or journals that aren't secured

The journal also had a protector sheet (removable) to protect the first page from leather bleeding or stains

so I'm not concerned with breaking the spine or tearing pages

The journal is nice but beware... the pages when writing are almost impossible to Earase on bc u will put a whole in the page even if it's something small u gently earase.
