I take steps to preserve battery life, like leaving Data and Wi-Fi radios turned off when I'm not using them, only using one or the other, blanking the screen manually instead of waiting for it to blank itself, etc

It's maybe 1-2 hours of screen time difference, but if your main concern is battery life, get a nice phone and buy a battery pack.
