I think the filter evens out the water flow into the coffee grinds and, combined with the strength indicator, therefore makes for better coffee

Coffee grinds are not thoroughly wet, as if the drip does not cover the entire area

Remember those days your in a rush to get to work, or get your kids to school, hoping for a nice hot cup of coffee, to find it full of coffee grinds, because the filter despite placing it correctly, would sometimes fold over on one side, allowing grinds to go over and into the coffee pot

I've had cheap-o $8 versions from Walmart last longer.
