I expected that "adjustable shelves" meant that there would be peg holes placed all along both sides of the bookcase, but this was not quite the case

I had to put the shelves about 4" apart across the middle in order to be able to stand books upright on the bottom & top shelves

The bottoms of all shelves are not finished (it's just the wood), so you can see the wooden bottom of the top shelves, even if the bookshelf is black

A very nice shelving unit.

My only complaint is that the adjustable shelves appeared to be drooping with the weight of the textbooks, so we had to remove many of the books and put them on the two immobile shelves (bottom and middle)

Are said shelves capable of holding books... also yes
