The 18-140 lens has worked great for me when on vacation, zoo, travel, and walking around.

I never dug my 12-24mm lens out of the bag on my most recent trip, however I recommend using the manual focus setting on the lens as this lens is not fast and often requires shooting at wider apertures in some light conditions and you want to insure that what you want is in focus specifically is in focus in the end image

I had a lot of people tell me to get a static lens (non-zoom), but I knew myself and that zoom would be important to me.

The 18-140 lens is very useful for family pictures It will not be necesary to change lens during the pictures sessions

I regret the 50mm lens - I ended up buying the 35 mm lens to complement.

The 18-140mm kit lens is obviously very versatile but rather heavy and not as good optically as even the 18-55mm kit lens (all in one zoom lenses are always a compromise; the older nikon 18-135mm non-vr lens circa 2005 is the best of this genre).

I also took advantage of an offer from Amazon and upgraded from the kit lenses to a better lens and got a $300 discount.

-5.6 VR lens, I will say it is a fine lens but weighs just under 2 lbs. and costs almost $1000

I like the 18-140 mm lens and also bought the 50mm lens so it would be compact.

The 18-140mm lens is one of the best lens I have

are sharp(with a good lens) and high ISO files are clean and usable up to ISO 4000, maybe even 6400 if you are careful and or apply a little post processingOn auto this camera take some of the best photos - consistently turns out nicely exposed images even when popup flash is used

Further, I often like to use large lenses, such as the Nikon 18-300VRII -- this lens is no lightweight and it is nice to combine it with the lightweight body of the D5300 to lessen the overall weight I am carrying

If you're continuing on your photography journey you should certainly consider this camera and if like me, you already have some of the inexpensive kit lenses, treat yourself to a more expensive zoom or prime lens and grow your overall capabilities.

When using a good lens (ie the 35mm f/1.8G), the D5300 is a bit sharper than the D5200 (and even more so than the D3300).

If you're ok with no warranty, opened/used product and the wrong lens, then this might be the camera for you! :-)

I will just tell you that if you put a great Nikon lens on this little body you will have superb results

It's a very good lens with AF-S VR and takes very sharp pictures; it's just not the focal length for me

With the right lens, you can capture any moment exactly how you want to with this camera

Get this camera with the better 18MM-140MM lens

Coupled with the right lens for hobbiest/entry level

The larger lens si more suitable for travel.

This might be a lens problem as well, but in my experience Canon does a better job in general with smoother autofocusing

Great camera and lens combo and at half the price I paid for the first one I bought a couple of years ago.

Also a good range lens, perfect for everyday shooting.
