Having said that, it does a great job driving my big Sennheiser Pro headphones, and has the warm sound indicative of tube amplifiers, without the shrillness of solid state designs.

Were you to open the unit up and look inside (like I did) you would find that the preamp stage is tube, and the output stage is solid-state

I generally go for solid state amps over tube designs, even hybrids like this one, but for the price, giving this a shot is a no-brainer, and I couldn't be happier that I did

That unit has an extremely good solid-state headphone amp in it, plus a very good DAC, does not require an external power source, and IMO beats the Dragonfly Red (I have both)

A solid state power section usually offers lower total harmonic distortion than tubes (unless you spend enough money for good used car on a true push/pull amp)

I have been rather interested in trying this amp out with with Soviet era vacuum tubes and I was shocked as to how good they make this amp
