You basically have to hold the guide while you set the paper to be punched so that the guide doesn't move before the paper gets punched.

Take the bottom off the punch so you can see the guide and wedge that paper under it

Nothing wastes time like fighting with a hole punch, or getting the papers punched badly (partial punching, hole mis-alignment, jammed punch....)
