The bumper around the bezel protects the screen and the tough shell on the back side protects the phone.

Dropped it on soft carpeting and the screen on a brand new phone immediately shattered

It does accomplish the job I bought it for though: showing the pretty purple phone color and covering the corners and protecting the screen.
