So rather than having the bedside table be full of charger plugs we wanted a simple, easy power strip with built in USB charging

The risk of an incorrectly designed & manufactured non-powered device is low, but the risk of using an incorrectly designed & manufactured powered device, especially one that stays plugged into the wall was too high for me to accept.

I ordered this power strip as a compact power center for our kitchen table

So, even if it is a decent power strip, it still provides way less amperage to the USB ports than was advertised.
