I think that Steam has a version where it's been retrofitted to their multi-player infrastructure and works, but it requires you buy the game directly from them.
OK...so the game is great, but when I purchased it, there wasn't anything on there to tell me that the Internet multi-player had been disabled.
I love the single player for this campaign.
