I was concerned about the heat, fan noise and other issues of the 4 that other consumers have cited; however, because of my surround sound setup, I needed an optical or a coax connection for 5.1 sound and the 4 was the only Roku device which provided an optical output.

Later, I found out that some Roku 4s were shipped without a thermal pad between the CPU and heatsink, which resulted in the loud fan noise.

Havent had any issues with the fan/noise/overheating - it does have a setting to "run cooler" and it warns that using this setting could cause more noise from the fan so if you have this problem i would check the settings

I don't know who is posting about excessive fan noise, but I would have never even thought about that if I didn't read some reviews, as far as I am concerned it is a non issue.

Does have fan noise, but there is an auto off feature in settings that shuts it down after so long of inactivity or you can power off from there.
