The "leather" - was stiffer than the box it was shipped in

This is a bonded leather, which isn't usually the highest quality when it comes to leather, but unless you want to spend quite a bit more for a top-grain leather this seems like a reasonable choice

but I wish the leather was a bit softer and more supple.

Certainly no designer and its very evident that its fake leather, but good for what it's worth.

Yes, there is some shredded leather waste used in the manufacturing of bonded leather (along with glues, plastics, etc.), but it does NOT smell, feel, or wear like leather
