Since Verizon is the only supplier of compatible extenders for their network they pretty much own the market for these devices and thus there is no pressure to lower pricing or improve the extender
The main difference I am aware of is that this older extender only can only download data at "1x" speeds (much slower than 3G)
Second -and this addresses the router incompatibility issue- temporarily plug your extender directly into your broadband connection
