While they can be used for any kind of highlighting in books and journals, I find them particularly effective in highlighting ballpoint pen notes written on index cards, in a journal, or in a notebook because the Smear Guard feature works quite well on ballpoint pen ink; even on gel-pen ink these will work well if you give the ink a few moments to dry
