The ink is still dark.

They are great if you need them for a large project or do not want to waste all the ink on smaller sharpies

Does it suck up more ink or something?

This is of note: the ink in this particular Sharpie black marker contains cresol and xylene, and one or the other of them will slowly bleed into any surface that contains latex.
