Now I can't even format them, and the various tricks for getting them back with write access are not working.

I hate it, then it just stopped working and it's too bad since I was planning to hurl it into oncoming traffic.

If you use both systems or share with friends, you need to format it exFAT in your Mac to make it compatible with both systems and larger files (reportedly, will cause some compatibility problems with old versions of OS X and Windows).Other than that, I like this USB drive and is working just fine.
