The highest volumes are on the verge of discomfort but are not painful to listen to in my tests (although you will obviously suffer hearing loss if you do listen to anything at high volumes for any length of time).This product is just perfect if you are looking to buy a good AMP/DAC combo for home use under $100 without any compromises

In regards to the SMSL DAC, it sits in the middle range of DACs between the "Can you even consider this a DAC" (Most TVs, motherboard audio, cheap amps etc.) and the "I had to sell my house for it, but it was worth it
